Crocodiles of the World

Visit crocodile zoo in Oxfordshire

"Crocodiles of the World" in Carterton, England, is a unique and fascinating attraction that has made a name for itself as the only crocodile zoo in the UK. Located in the picturesque landscape of Oxfordshire, this specialized center offers an impressive collection of crocodiles, alligators, and other reptiles that attract visitors from around the world. It was founded in 2011 by Shaun Foggett, a passionate crocodile expert who has dedicated his life to studying and protecting these fascinating animals. Originally started in Crawley Mill near Witney, the zoo later moved to Brize Norton near Carterton, where it continued to evolve and expand. The zoo's origin story was even captured in a TV documentary called "Croc Man," showcasing Foggett's personal dedication – including selling his family home to fund the project – impressively.

Interactive experiences at zoo

The zoo houses one of the most diverse collections of crocodilians worldwide, with over 150 animals from more than 19 of the 26 known crocodile species. Highlights include rare and endangered species such as the Siamese crocodile from Cambodia, the Chinese alligator, or the impressive saltwater crocodile. In addition to crocodiles, there are also a variety of other reptiles such as caimans, turtles, and lizards, including an impressive crocodile monitor and a group of Galapagos giant tortoises. The collection is complemented by some non-reptilian residents such as meerkats, tamarins, and birds, adding an additional diversity to the zoo. A special feature is the underwater viewing windows, allowing visitors to observe the animals from a whole new perspective and experience their movements in the water up close.

Crocodile species at Crocodiles of the World

"Crocodiles of the World" places great emphasis on education and conservation. Daily lectures and feeding demonstrations are held, where visitors can learn more about the biology, behavior, and threats facing these ancient creatures from knowledgeable animal caretakers. The facility is designed to mimic the animals' natural environments, promoting not only the well-being of the animals but also providing visitors with an authentic experience. The zoo actively participates in breeding programs to preserve endangered species, and for example, successfully bred the false gharial, an endangered crocodile species, with ten offspring hatching in 2017. Additionally, they engage in rescue missions, such as taking in a crocodile previously kept in a greenhouse in Sweden.

Family-friendly activities at zoo

In addition to simply observing the animals, the zoo also offers interactive experiences, popular with families and adventure-seekers. Visitors have the opportunity to participate in "Keeper Experiences," where they can accompany animal caretakers, assist with feeding, or even hold a baby crocodile – an unforgettable experience often captured in a photo. For children, there are special programs like the "Junior Croc Keeper," while brave adults can seek thrills in the "Nile Crocodile Experience." Other animal species such as meerkats or monitors are also available for such encounters, highlighting the variety of experiences on offer.

Conservation projects at crocodile center

The facility itself is modern and well thought out, with informative signs providing fascinating facts about the animals, and an outdoor area suitable for picnics. A café caters to visitors with food and drinks, while a souvenir shop offers crocodile fans the opportunity to take home mementos. The zoo is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has received several awards, including the "Best New Business Award" in 2013 and the "Hospitality Award" in 2015, highlighting its quality and popularity.

Visited for my partners birthday and got her the nile feeding experience. The place is quite small, so it's not a full day trip, but it is a unique feeling experience for the hour or so you'd need to see it. I didn't catch the name of the guy who did the experience but he was very knowledgeable and made it a memorable day. We visited on 25/02/25 to identify the feeder. It was a midweek non- school holiday visit so it was quiet and we got to speak to some other keepers who were all friendly too, especially the woman who fed the cats

My girlfriend bought me a crocodile feeding experience for Xmas. The experience is excellent, we got plenty of time and opportunity to feed the crocodiles. The keepers were extremely open to being questioned for information. We had a great day and can't wait to return and see the facility grow. Well worth the trip down from Cumbria

We really enjoyed our day out at Croc World. The animals appeared to be very well cared for, and there were some that we've never seen anywhere else (Caiman Lizard). Went on a Monday, wasn't too busy and the Nile feeding experience was great. Will definitely be coming back!!

Great place if you like crocs and reptiles. Impressed with the condition of the wildlife. The staff we spoke to were knowledgeable & friendly. It was a good way to spend a wet Saturday & my grandson loved his birthday treat. I would recommend it. Long wait at the cafe, as they know how many tickets sold. Perhaps a few more staff at busy times.

Loads of different crocodiles and other similar animals to see, various talks and small play areas for kids. Visited on a weekend but didn't feel too busy, great little find, would go again.

We visited on a Thursday and had no idea this gem was here! We came it across it on google maps whilst looking for The Farmer’s Dog pub. The enclosures were al clean and well maintained and I’m sure some of the crocodiles were smiling 🐊 We enjoyed watching the Nile crocodiles being fed it was engaging and Interesting to see and learn about them. And the sound of the air escaping their jaws! We were thrilled to see the Galapagos Tortoises, we think they’re magnificent and Im not sure but I think there were some young baby Galapagos Tortoises too! We also got to see the Binturong’s feeding, Mother and Son which was lovely to see. All in all it was a good visit, we will love to see how it expands over the years and will certainly revisit.

Great place with amazing animals. The zoo keepers are very helpful and advised us to watch a documentary and series on amazon prime about how the park started and that is very interesting too. Amazing to see how far it has come and I can't wait to visit again.
