Visit crocodile zoo in Oxfordshire
"Crocodiles of the World" in Carterton, England, is a unique and fascinating attraction that has made a name for itself as the only crocodile zoo in the UK. Located in the picturesque landscape of Oxfordshire, this specialized center offers an impressive collection of crocodiles, alligators, and other reptiles that attract visitors from around the world. It was founded in 2011 by Shaun Foggett, a passionate crocodile expert who has dedicated his life to studying and protecting these fascinating animals. Originally started in Crawley Mill near Witney, the zoo later moved to Brize Norton near Carterton, where it continued to evolve and expand. The zoo's origin story was even captured in a TV documentary called "Croc Man," showcasing Foggett's personal dedication – including selling his family home to fund the project – impressively.
Interactive experiences at zoo
The zoo houses one of the most diverse collections of crocodilians worldwide, with over 150 animals from more than 19 of the 26 known crocodile species. Highlights include rare and endangered species such as the Siamese crocodile from Cambodia, the Chinese alligator, or the impressive saltwater crocodile. In addition to crocodiles, there are also a variety of other reptiles such as caimans, turtles, and lizards, including an impressive crocodile monitor and a group of Galapagos giant tortoises. The collection is complemented by some non-reptilian residents such as meerkats, tamarins, and birds, adding an additional diversity to the zoo. A special feature is the underwater viewing windows, allowing visitors to observe the animals from a whole new perspective and experience their movements in the water up close.
Crocodile species at Crocodiles of the World
"Crocodiles of the World" places great emphasis on education and conservation. Daily lectures and feeding demonstrations are held, where visitors can learn more about the biology, behavior, and threats facing these ancient creatures from knowledgeable animal caretakers. The facility is designed to mimic the animals' natural environments, promoting not only the well-being of the animals but also providing visitors with an authentic experience. The zoo actively participates in breeding programs to preserve endangered species, and for example, successfully bred the false gharial, an endangered crocodile species, with ten offspring hatching in 2017. Additionally, they engage in rescue missions, such as taking in a crocodile previously kept in a greenhouse in Sweden.
Family-friendly activities at zoo
In addition to simply observing the animals, the zoo also offers interactive experiences, popular with families and adventure-seekers. Visitors have the opportunity to participate in "Keeper Experiences," where they can accompany animal caretakers, assist with feeding, or even hold a baby crocodile – an unforgettable experience often captured in a photo. For children, there are special programs like the "Junior Croc Keeper," while brave adults can seek thrills in the "Nile Crocodile Experience." Other animal species such as meerkats or monitors are also available for such encounters, highlighting the variety of experiences on offer.

The zoo is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has received several awards, including the "Best New Business Award" in 2013 and the "Hospitality Award" in 2015, highlighting its quality and popularity.
